Student Video 'Photo Music' unites old & new!!!

Ben, Avery & Denver turned a simple assignment into a spectacle of sight and sound with the photo equipment they used in the first semester as their 'instruments' and the new mac computers to edit their sound and film for the video half of the year...

Hope you enjoy the film as much as our Upper School morning meeting did in the closing days of the 2011-12 school year...

Senior Guerrilla Art!!!!

As part of the senior selectives offerings this year, Swartley became the hub of creative fervor in a visual call for action!!!

Keep your eyes open around campus as the creative thoughts and artistic meanderings of our seniors take root and grow...Haiku, blackout poetry and toy soldier statements are just a few of the surprises in store...

Spring Museum Trips Part I - 6th grade @ the Met

The 6th Grade spent a day at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in conjunction with their study in classes of Greek & Roman history and culture.  Sketchbooks in hand, they were first led through the collection with their teachers as guides, exploring Archaic through Baroque periods before checking out Roman works...

A great day was had by all, what a great way to bring our studies to life!

5th Grade Inspired by POP artists old & new...

For a mini-unit led by visual arts & art history chair, Gregg Emery, students of the 5th grade class were led through lessons in color theory and art history...culminating in a final painting project inspired by the works of both Andy Warhol & Josh Williams 02'...

The Dwight-Englewood Bulldog was the final image when all of the pieces came together...Congrats Class of 2019!

Students looked at Andy Warhol to see the effects different color might have on the same picture...

 

Students also looked at the work of Josh Williams 02' for inspiration.

We are so very proud of Josh Williams 02' and his recent show in Paris, thanks for helping inspire a new generation of young artists!

2012 Senior Student Sculpture becomes part of campus landscape!!!!

After months of planning, sealing wood pieces in his garage and 3 days of putting it together, with the occasional reworking, in between lacrosse practices, Matt Brice 12' kneels proudly in front of his original sculpture, the newest addition to Dwight-Englewood's growing group of outdoor sculptures.

Couldn't have done any of this without the help of our amazing grounds crew, especially Bruce and Kevin!

Matt's Dad trained him well, measure twice, cut once or in this case measure 42 times, place it once.

We are all so proud of you Matt!  Let us thank everyone from the beginning through to the end...from the first days in Ms. Diaz' AP Studio Art Class with the simple inspiration of materials and the idea of 'motion', Dr. De Jarnett & Mr. Algrant for their approval and encouragement, Ms. Stadulis, Mr. Devlin and the whole crew for their expertise and work, all of your teachers & coaches, your parents and grandparents, and most of all you for having the vision, design sense and work ethic to take this project from conception to completion and leaving a beautiful work of art behind as you graduate in a few short months,....

15th Annual Senior Spotlight Exhibit huge success, 'Best In Show' winner announced...

Senior Spotlight was bigger than ever, featuring a variety of amazing works of art from 7 senior artists.  Pictured here are all 7, Matt Brice, Ms Diaz (teacher of all 7), Anna Karpman, Olivia Lim, Hanna Lefcourt, Sam Leung, Gordon Marquardt, Lauren Kearney & head of the department, Mr. Emery.

The lunchtime opening saw a packed house in the Swartley Gallery with students, teachers, family, friends and even our illustrious and supportive head of school, Rodney Dejarnett, here on the left checking out some of his favorites works.

'We couldn't have done it without the amazing support of our parents, teachers and friends,' was heard again and again...here we see parents of Matt Brice 12' and Gordon Marquardt 12' as well as Ms. Diaz (art instructor of all 7 spotlighted artists this year.)

Last year a new tradition began with the initiation of the 'Best In Show'...voted on by all attendees of the exhibit.  The 'Best In Show' artist is awarded an art supply gift card and free passes to area museums.  They are also invited to exhibit their winning artwork on the D-E campus.  This year's winner was Anna Karpman with her stunning fashion design.

 

Congratulations to all of this year's artists!  We are so very proud of you and look forward of continuing to hear of your artistic accomplishments as you leave Swartley in a few short months...
